Vertiv CoolChip CDU 70: Liquid Cooling for AI Without Building a New Building

Vertiv™ CoolChip CDU 70 Turnkey Solution
The Vertiv™ CoolChip CDU 70 is unique in the 360AI series: its liquid-to-air (L2A) design creates a fully closed secondary cooling loop and rejects heat into the surrounding air via a built-in heat exchanger—without any connection to a chilled water system. The unit operates within the facility's existing air infrastructure, making it an ideal choice for existing data centers with traditional air cooling. Where other solutions would require a major infrastructure upgrade, the Vertiv™ CoolChip CDU 70 is easy to install and operate.
Vertiv's CoolChip CDU 70 solution has selected and tested compatible components in various configurations, so the customer receives a ready-made, proven architecture where the CDU, rack, manifold, PDU, and monitoring are matched and guaranteed to work together.
The solution is designed for an 88 kW IT load in a single rack, with 70 kW distributed to liquid cooling directly on the chip and 18 kW to traditional air cooling. This ratio allows for a gradual transition to liquid cooling without abandoning the existing air infrastructure.
The solution includes everything you need: a Vertiv™ VR3357 server rack (48U, 800 x 1200 mm) with a maximum static load of 1363 kg, a CDU 70 coolant distribution unit, a Vertiv™ CoolChip Fluid Network in-rack manifold (RM124, 36U), two Vertiv™ PowerIT rPDUs with outlet-level switching (80 A, 57.6 kW each), a Vertiv™ Liebert® LT460 zonal leak detection system and a Vertiv™ Liebert® RDU501 intelligent infrastructure management unit.
In-rack manifold
The Vertiv™ CoolChip Fluid Network Manifold (RM124) is supplied as a complete unit and mounts in a zero-U rack space, eliminating any server rack space. The CDU connects to the server cold plates using drip-free quick-disconnects. The stainless steel construction and factory cleaning ensure a clean circuit from day one.
Technical specifications
The Vertiv™ CoolChip CDU 70 delivers a nominal cooling capacity of 70 kW with an approach temperature difference (ATD) of 11°C. The specific liquid flow rate in the secondary circuit is 1.5 l/min per kW using a 25% propylene glycol solution, and the liquid supply temperature to the servers is up to 35.6°C. The unit’s dimensions of 2300 × 600 × 1200 mm allow it to be placed close to a server rack in a row. Power is standard single-phase 230 V/50 Hz or 115 V/60 Hz. The operating temperature range is from 0°C to 40°C with a relative humidity of 10% to 90%.
Monitoring and security under control
The Vertiv™ Liebert® RDU501 monitors the entire solution, tracking temperature, power, and asset status in a single dashboard and supporting remote server management. The LT460 leak detection system monitors up to 30 meters of moisture detection cable and immediately alerts to any leaks. rPDUs enable remote control of each outlet and send alerts about exceeded load thresholds via email, SMS, or SNMP.
Scaling without changing architecture
The Vertiv™ CoolChip CDU 70 in the 360AI is a great starting point for growth. As your needs grow, you can seamlessly scale to liquid-to-liquid models: CDU 121, CDU 600, CDU 1350, and even the flagship 2.3 MW CDU 2300—all while maintaining a unified management architecture and familiar maintenance approaches.
